Tribute to Howard (continued)
Howard Gairy ,The father of 2 and a doorman at the Guvernment Night Club a former employee of the Alliance Entertainment was shot and killed on Aug 13,2002 shortly after 2am. The man accused of his murder was under a court order not to have a hand gun. The gun to this day still remains missing either dropped and picked up or passesd off by the accused killer who was held by Derrick Ling,Blake Mitchell,Gold Kang and other security staff for police. At the time of the shooting it is estimated there was about 400 people in the immediate area,There were 3 shots fired and police are still actively looking for the gun. Witnesses in the Orange Room described the scene of pandemonium in the moments after gunfire erupted in the packed and noisy Orange Room, one of the three lounges within the club. I heard 3 shots and everybody started running...Said Eric Hammond an Orange room regular,The bouncers were herding people out.People were all over the place. Everybody just started piling out added Ross Hodgson ,in town from Kitchener, People were pushing us from behind,Girls were crying. The shots were very distinct,Then three seconds later there was mass hysteria said Micheal Dorbyk, The victim's cousin Conroy Gairy was among family members who met with homicide detectives at the morgue. It's a very tough,he recalled "It's way too close to home" CLUB STAYED OPEN AFTER KILLING OUTRAGES FAMILY AND STAFF While medics tried to revive Gairy and afterwards as polie investigated the other rooms remained open and music continued to blare from the nightclub It's a real travesty, they kept it open said Conroy,That's an insult to my cousin who was an employee". Despite the shooting,The owner and other members of managment decided not to shut down the club and the party continued for 3 hours after the incident. That angered several employees who spoke to the local newspaper. They said about 20 employees including security and bar staff were so outraged after the owner decided not to close the club that they just left and went home. "It is the most digusting thing I''ve ever seen in my life"said one of the distraught employees who didn't want to be identified because they feared for their jobs. "It's Complete Disrepect" Owner Charles Khabouth defended the decision saying he didn't want to start a panic by immediatley shutting down the twin level 60,000 square foot facility which contains eight large rooms. The head of Security and I decided to shut it down gradually...we didnt want to start a Panic. There were 2000 people in the building he said. Mark Bucinno a customer who was leaving the club around 3 am said he wondered why they didnt shut down the bar. He said that people on the dance floor around 2:45 had said they was a shooting but they didnt even turn down the music....to me that says alot. Toronto Homicide Dective Bob Wilkinson wouldn't comment when asked whether it was appropriate that managment decided to keep the club open after the shooting. Gairy was shot 3 times in the chest and withing seconds the panicked crowd tried to clear the orange room while the suspect tried to fight his way out of the club. But members of Security caught up with him outside. Gairy was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead on arrival. Police have never recovered the gun.JUSTICE IS FINALLY SERVED AFTER 4YRS... Second trial ends with conviction Howard Gairy's parents breathed a sigh of relief when the jury returned a verdict of second-degree murder in the shooting death of their son. The three-woman, nine-man jury were into the second day of deliberations after a two-week trial when they arrived at their decision at about 7 p.m. last night. Wearing plaited cornrows, a "thug life" tattoo on his right forearm and a tattoo with "Mom" in a heart as well as his son's name on his other arm, Quentin Danvers glared down the Gairy family as he was led away in handcuffs at the end of his second trial. The first three-week trial ended in January with a hung jury. The first trial ended because "we didn't have the gunshot residue evidence on his (Danvers') underwear," explained Crown Attorney Nancy Krigas outside court. She said bouncer Goldy Kang had seen 21-year-old Danvers stick the gun back in his underwear after shooting Gairy, 24, twice in the chest. The underwear was tested and residue was found, but the crucial evidence was not available for the first trial, she said. "It was a timing issue." The night he died, Gairy was on his last shift as a bouncer at the Guvernment night club before he planned to return to Michigan Tech as a star football player on scholarship. He was gunned down during an altercation at the Queens Quay E. club on Aug. 13, 2000 at 2 a.m. Although the jury was unanimous in their verdict of second-degree murder as charged, they were not unanimous about when Danvers should get parole. One of the 12 jurors recommended parole after 10 years, three after 20 while eight had no recommendations. The judge reserved sentencing until June 6. Ewaschuk said he would also deal with Danvers' firearm prohibition violations at that time. Danvers, who had two weapons prohibitions at the time of the murder, now faces two charges of possessing a firearm while prohibited. "Shootings in this city are out of control. The homicide squad is overworked and underfunded. We won this battle (but) we're not winning the war," Crown Attorney Robin Flumerfelt said outside court last night. "He (Danvers) was a gun-wielding thug and his lifestyle is reflected on his tattoo `thug life' and he took this promising man's life away," said Krigas. "It's tragic for both families. It's something that should never have happened," said homicide detective Bob Wilkinson. It was a cruel twist of fate that Gairy was working that night at the Guvernment. He had opted to go in for a final unscheduled shift and was supposed to be working on the rooftop patio and not the Orange Room where he was shot after asking a friend of the accused to leave the club. But he had come in to work another shift before leaving for Michigan Tech where he was on a football scholarship studying marketing and sports medicine, his uncle Herbert Smith said outside court. He was Ontario wrestling champion for his age group, his uncle said. He was also an alternate on the |Canadian Olympic wrestling team. Every year the high school he attended in Brampton, Turner Fenton Secondary School, holds a wrestling tournament "in his honour," his uncle said. "It's finally over," said the victim's mother Vandell Gairy outside court after she hugged her husband Garfield. Unsettled We all want answers to the unknown We live our lives impatiently, restless, always on the go You always wondering about things and why they are wondering about friendships, relationships and who people really are. You could know someone today and tomorrow, they could be gone. We leave things unsaid, so much left unknown. Patience is a virtue on the road that we all have traveled on. As we sit and wait eventually, hopefully the answers will come Our Life so far for me has been a journey, a journey to destination unknown. Howard Lived his life as a very contented man an his death has passed on a formula to all of us. Howard Gairy lived his life a contented man Just enough happiness to be glad Just enough sorrow to sometimes be sad Just enough trials to challenge each day Just enough success to keep failure away Just enough hope to look to tomorrow Just enough faith to deal with sorrow Just enough money to pay one's way Just enough want to earn one's pay Just enough love to pass around Just enough to charity to astound "These attributes follow them morning, day and night and you will have the formula for a contented life!" As we all entered into the year 2000 It was a new century and millennium reminding all of us we age in our own autobiography and as we start a new page in our lives we must forget all the past mistakes of what we could have done and we must instead focus on the future in changing the path that lays ahead. We are all property of God's Garden, We are all seeds planted by him Some of us are beautiful roses showing the symbol of Love and Happiness and some us are evil weeds showing the symbol of Evil and Destruction! Howard was definitely a bunch of roses. "But the bad weed that wasn't pulled from the garden on Aug. 13 2000, 2:43am Unfortunately held Howard's last rose!" As I stood an watched his last rose endured the wind I watched all the Garden's crumble around him, The first frost of death stole through the night and as he felt the snow upon his pedals before he was taken away to his destiny, it simply tells me now that all my moments sad or bright... nothing stays the way that it was. So to the Guvernment staff, family and friends please remember this message that I am about to tell you. One Day at a Time Each day try to live one day at a time Don't say this is mine but think of it as ours Try to be kind, Generous, say nice things even take time to smile, Spare a few minutes for the elders, reach out to children, spread good cheer, promote good will, give aims to the poor. Each day try to accomplish most of it but for today, JUST TRY YOUR BEST! So today I will give thanks because who needs tomorrow when I have today It's today that matters, tomorrow is just too far away, I will live today to the fullest being the best that I can be I don't need tomorrow that's something, I just can't see And if today is the worst day You've ever had I will still give thanks when I Lay down to pray, At least I was lucky enough to have this day. In every age, In every place there are people who live by the rule of violence their regard for human life is minimal and they inflict pain wherever they go and travel. They are seen as strong when in fact they are sadly weak. Their power is very temporary and they will be required to atone for their wrongs one day. Not all individuals who plot evil will come to the same end, at least not in this life, but if you can rely on the word of God that those who do wrong are hiding themselves and that one day they will have to answers for the evil they have been responsible for and what they have done in the dark will be revealed in the light and they will find a surprise that they have turned away from salvation, The Dark they live in will seem even Darker on their day of Punishment. To all the my coworkers who were there that night, and my friends and True Supporters "We find that we can handle any challenges life sends If we rely on the inner strength and help of caring friends When things aren't going quite as well as well as we would like to be With the dawn of each new day, your skies are less than blue If you believe in each other it will give you the strength to restore your confidence and pride, REMEMBER "I STAND BY ALL OF YOU TO CARE AND LISTEN ANYTIME YOU NEED ME AS A FRIEND. This is dedicated to all nightclub personal, Door staff, people of law enforcement who risk they lives to protect and serve the customers and people in the clubs and community in whatever environment they work in.
